Here in the United States, powerful socioeconomic forces are affecting when, where and how people want to learn. Many established schools of higher education are responding by integrating Internet-based programs into their curriculum. In addition, scores of for-profit educational businesses are emerging to take advantage of the growing interest in online learning. According to Thomas Weisel Partners, a San Francisco-based merchant bank, "virtual higher ed" will be a $10 billion market by 2003, and the corporate-learning market will grow to $11 billion in the same time frame.
