摘要

The purpose of this book is to ampify and replace a large section (Chapters 16 to 20, 24) of a previous work, Metamorphic Petrology, 2d edition (McGraw-Hill, 1960), by this writer and his colleague, J. Verhoogen. Like the previous book it is intended as a general text for advanced students, research workers, and teachers in geology. It embodies a survey of mineralogical aspects of metamorphism, paying more attention to vitally significant field relations than was done before. For this reason emphasis has been placed upon specific regions, with which the writer, at least to some degree, is familiar. A notable exception is metamorphism in Japan. The writer has not yet had the opportunity to visit this country; but Japanese contributions to metamorphic petrology over the past few decades are too important to be omitted. References, listed collectivelly at the end of each chapter, are mainly to literature of the last decade, but include also indispensable older classics. For other references the reade is referred to Turner and Verhoogen (1960) and to Fyfe, Turner, and Verhoogen (1958).
