places strong emphasis on developing the reader's intuition. On the other hand, both books are hard to skim. If the level is not right for the course, then one must reluctantly treat the book as recommeded reading and choose a more efficient textbook. One final remark. It seems to me that information theory is a more mathematical subject in the Soviet Union than it is in the United States. Nonetheless, as evidenced by this book, the cultures are developing along parallel lines.
